Nominate CVK for an Oakland Indie Award

I heart me some Cafe van Kleef and have nominated it for an Indie award...care to second (third, fourth...) it?
http://www.oaklandunwrapped.com/indies/

I nominated it under the "oakland soul" category (represents the soul, the essence and the style of Oakland; this business or artist embraces diversity & creativity, has confidence in their individuality, helps their brothers & sisters, and has no pretensions).

4th annual

you are cordially invited to attend
the Cheshire Rock Opera
on the evening of 1-27-2007
this is an annual celebration of
Lewis Carroll, his works &
his effect on popular music.
please attend as one of the
characters from wonderland.
bring tea & cakes to share
& bottles marked "drink me".
a song book & album will be
available to interested parties.
those attending may be asked
for a modest donation:
$5 for those in costume & character
$10 for those simply in costume
& $20 for those who can't
be bothered to dress the part.
the event goes from around 8 untill...

first show was january 27 2004@ Van Kleef's in Oakland.
It was quite a production inluding the queen's concert,
tea party trio, suitcase puppet show of walrus & carpenter
and the jabberwock monstermasks. twas a mad evening
of fun.
the next was a one man show for an intimate audience
of close friends.
it's third year running was the mad tea party with a book
& c.d. to accompany.
the 4th year is set to be in co-operation with
the lucid dream lounge.
this is the culmination of a lifetimes connection to
the writings of Lewis Caroll,
here was my original Idea :I'ts a glam rock opera,
Spacey sci-fi, I like ziggy style, and kabuki japanese
cats, bunraku, noh theatre. this is a description of
a young lewis caroll, in some fanciful asian opium den,
being served and having the hallucination that he
watered down to create alice's adventures in
wonderland. focusing on the bestiary of "Jabberwok"
, the white rabbit, the tea party, and a god-like
presence of the cheshire (cat).
seeking performers, puppet craft, and hosts for
this would bee epic of psychedelic performance art.
follow thee white rabbit...
the set so far
red queen (an original)
white rabbit(+new verses)
the walrus & the carpenter (to music)
I am the walrus (mutant version)
the humpty dump (mix of humpty dance with parts
of eggman & the original poem)
jabberwocky(grunge version)
to all tomorrows parties
the inverse set also features some surprizes from
the collective of songwriters (the likes of the hobo gobbelins,
sourmash hug band & accordion plague)

ttp://Cheshire-rockopera.tribe.net

AT THE START OF THE SHOW:
white rabbit makes an appearance & then takes us
"through the rabbit hole". when we hit the bottom
a red queen appears: I'm bored to tears with the likes
of you! I declare that there shall be a concert to
amuse me & my royal court."
at this point a page begins calling forth the appointed
acts,
***still looking for quick cabaret style performances
(2-3 songs) which can work with a wonderland style

when it comes time for the hatter to sing,
he does so off key & tempo, so badly that the
queen shouts: "stop him! he's murdering time!!!"
and a guard roughly ejects the hatter from the "stage".
perhaps a bit of mumbling as the court complains
of the hatter's ruination of the concert.
focus shifts to the tea party set.
mad hatter: Oh bugger! they've broken my watch!
march hare: let me see that watch hatter.
(smears it with a thick layer of butter)
that should do the trick.
hatter: (shakes watch & listens) nope, it's still broken
now, we'll be stuck in tea time forever.
dormouse: play us a song hatter, to help us pass the time
hatter plays white rabbit....
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall

/ F# - / G - / F# - / G - / A CD A - /

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice when she was just small

When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice, I think she'll know

/ E - / A - / E - / A - / F# - - - /

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's off with her head
Remember what the dormouse said
Feed your head, feed your head

/ F# - / G - / F# - / G - / A CD A - / E A E A /

at the conclusion of the song the dormouse says
"feed your head"
hare: what'd he say?
hatter: I don't know, I can't remember.
mouse: feed your head!
hatter: well then, what ever are we to feed it?
hare: I've got an idea, let's feed it treacol
alice: where ever shall we find treacol?
hatter: why, at the bottom of a well, of course
another cup of tea?
alice: but if we were to fall down the well,
however should we get back out again?
hare: we shan't be able to get out, we'd be
stuck down there for the rest of time with
nothing but treacol to eat, pass the crumpets
alice: but if the moon could only see
down in the well, I'm certain she...
mouse:...would be so sad that she would cry
an clouds blot out the starry sky
alice: fill the well up with the rain
so we could get back out again!
hatter:..and float down to a salty sea...
hare: where maybe we could look & see
hatter: a bite of something good to eat
hare: a tasty dish!
hatter & hare together: A FISHY TREAT!!
at this point a mock turtle comes in with
a taureen of hot green soup, followed by a
gryphon.
hatter: I say there, mock turtle what's that
you've got?
mock: it is a most beautiful soup! try some
(ladles some into tiny cups passing some to the party)
hatter:delicious!
as the band strikes up the beautiful soup song
the soup service continues.

Beautiful Soup
c g
Beautiful Soup, so rich and green,
Beautiful, beauti--FUL SOUP!

at the end of the song,
hatter asks: I say, mock turtle, did you bring any
lobsters with you?
mock: no, (sadly) but they sent this message
(hands card to hatter)
hatter: (reading from card)
"dear sir
we thank you kindly for your invitation to the
cheshire rock opera, however we are already
engaged to attend the lobster quadrille.
best wishes,
the lobsters"
... ah, the lobster quadrille, what a lovely song
and dance!"
mock: (disagreeably) I always thought it was very sad
hatter: no, I assure you it is a delightful little tune,
listen to the way we play it.
(during the tune mock turtle moves to the dance floor
& a group of alices dance around and with her.
The Lobster Quadrille
g f a d
"You can really have no notion how delightful it will be
g f a
d
When they take us up and throw us, with the lobsters, out to sea!"
g f a
d
But the snail replied "Too far, too far!" and gave a look askance -
g f a
d
Said he thanked the whiting kindly, but he would not join the dance.
d f d g d
f d g
Would not, could not, would not, could not, would not join the dance.
d f d g d
f d
Would not, could not, would not, could not, could not join the dance.

d f d f d f d f
"What matters it how far we go?" his scaly friend replied.
d f d f d f d g
"There is another shore, you know, upon the other side.
d f d f d f d f
The further off from England the nearer is to France -
d f d f d f
d
Then turn not pale, beloved snail, but come and join the dance.
d f d g d f
d f
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?
d f d g d f
d
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you join the dance?"

at the end of the song, mock turtle returns to the
table, with a worried look on his face
mock: that's all well & good, but I don't really undestand
can you play it again?
hatter: but of course
instead they play "the voice of the lobster"
'Tis the Voice of the Lobster
Cm
'Tis the voice of the Lobster: I heard him declare
Fm
"You have baked me too brown, I must sugar my hair."
Cm
As a duck with its eyelids, so he with his nose
D G
Trims his belt and buttons, and turns out his toes.
Cm
When the sands are all dry, he is gay as a lark
Fm
And will talk in contemptuous tones of the Shark:
Cm
But, when the tide rises and sharks are around,
D G ~~~
His voice has a timid and tremulous sound.

I passed by his garden, and marked with one eye,
How the Owl and Panther were sharing a pie:
The Panther took pie-crust, and gravy and meat,
While the Owl had the dish as its share of the treat.
When the pie was all finished, the Owl as a boon,
Was kindly permitted to pocket the spoon:
While the Panther received knife and fork with a growl,
And concluded the banquet by--

on the last note of the song a tuft of feathers is
thrown in the air.
mock: I don't see what the point is of repeating
all this stuff over & over, if you aren't going to
take the time to explain it.
hatter: I tell you what, mock turtle, I've got a box here
which is sure to explain everything.
puts the box on the table & thus is the set up for
walrus & the carpenter
The Walrus and The Carpenter
Lewis Carroll
(from Through the Looking-Glass and
What Alice Found There, 1872)
the verses shall be noted as such
first verse noted is v1, & 2nd is v2
thus follows
Em Am
The sun was shining on the sea,
B7 Em
Shining with all his might:
Em Am
He did his very best to make
B7 Em
The billows smooth and bright--
B7 Em
And this was odd, because it was
B7 Em
The middle of the night.

The moon was shining sulkily,
Because she thought the sun
Had got no business to be there
After the day was done--
"It's very rude of him," she said,
"To come and spoil the fun!"
B7 Em
The sea was wet as wet could be,
B7 Em
The sands were dry as dry.
B7 Em
You could not see a cloud, because
B7 Em
No cloud was in the sky:
Em Am
No birds were flying overhead--
B7 Em
There were no birds to fly.
v1
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Were walking close at hand;
They wept like anything to see
Such quantities of sand:
"If this were only cleared away,"
They said, "it would be grand!"
v2
"If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year.
Do you suppose," the Walrus said,
"That they could get it clear?"
"I doubt it," said the Carpenter,
And shed a bitter tear.
v1
"O Oysters, come and walk with us!"
The Walrus did beseech.
"A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,
Along the briny beach:
We cannot do with more than four,
To give a hand to each."
v2
The eldest Oyster looked at him,
But never a word he said:
The eldest Oyster winked his eye,
And shook his heavy head--
Meaning to say he did not choose
To leave the oyster-bed.
v1
But four young Oysters hurried up,
All eager for the treat:
Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,
Their shoes were clean and neat--
And this was odd, because, you know,
They hadn't any feet.
v2
Four other Oysters followed them,
And yet another four;
And thick and fast they came at last,
And more, and more, and more--
All hopping through the frothy waves,
And scrambling to the shore.
v1
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Walked on a mile or so,
And then they rested on a rock
Conveniently low:
And all the little Oysters stood
And waited in a row.
~~~~~~~
v1
"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."
~~~~~
v1 (or2)
"But wait a bit," the Oysters cried,
"Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!"
"No hurry!" said the Carpenter.
They thanked him much for that.
v1
"A loaf of bread," the Walrus said,
"Is what we chiefly need:
Pepper and vinegar besides
Are very good indeed--
Now if you're ready, Oysters dear,
We can begin to feed."
v2 (or1)
"But not on us!" the Oysters cried,
Turning a little blue.
"After such kindness, that would be
A dismal thing to do!"
"The night is fine," the Walrus said.
"Do you admire the view?
v2 (or1)
"It was so kind of you to come!
And you are very nice!"
The Carpenter said nothing but
"Cut us another slice:
I wish you were not quite so deaf--
I've had to ask you twice!"
v2(or1)
"It seems a shame," the Walrus said,
"To play them such a trick,
After we've brought them out so far,
And made them trot so quick!"
The Carpenter said nothing but
"The butter's spread too thick!"
v2
"I weep for you," the Walrus said:
"I deeply sympathize."
With sobs and tears he sorted out
Those of the largest size,
Holding his pocket-handkerchief
Before his streaming eyes.
v1
"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

during the last verses of the song trays of hors devors
(smoked oyster on a slice of french bread with a dash
of pepper & vinegar) are passed around.

I Am the Walrus

I am he
As you are he
As you are me
And we are all together.
See how they run
Like pigs from a gun
See how they fly. Im crying.
Sitting on a cornflake - waiting for the van to come.
Corporation teeshirt, stupid bloody
Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun,
If the sun dont come, you get a tan from
Standing in the English rain.
I am the eggman, oh, they are the eggmen -
Oh I am the walrus. GJOOB, GGOO, GJOOB.
Expert texpert choking smokers
Dont you think the joker laughs at you? Ha ha ha!
See how they smile,
Like pigs in a sty,
See how they snied. Im crying.
Semoline pilchards climbing up the Eiffel Tower.
Elementary penguin singing Hare Khrishna
Man you should have seen the kick in Edgar Allen Poe.
GOO GOO GOO JOOB GOO GOO
GOOOOOOOOOOOJOOOOOB.

at the end of the song humpty dumpty arrives.
& 1mb+ plays humpty song, during which the
jabber wocky creatures head off to get their masks on.
at the end of the song...

humpty: hello every body, since we've been
through the looking glass & back, I can tell before
we get there that you wont be able to understand
these next verses so, I'll do a bit of explaining in
advance.
he attempts to explain (with help from alice) the

East Bay Warehouse Movie Night

Hi friends!
I have been hosting Movie Nights every other week and I want to let people in this Tribe to know about this.

I live in a warehouse in Oakland, and luckily we have a large wall where I project movies. Past films include; Shuji Terayama's "Pastoral: To Die in Country", Alejandro Jodorowsky's "El Topo", Lotte Reiniger's "The Adventures of Prince Achmed", Ken Russell's "Salome's Last Dance", Guy Maddin's "Cowards Bend The Knee" and "Heart of the World", Jan Svankmajer's "Little Otik", David Cronenberg's "Videodrome", Shinya Tsukamoto's "Tetsuo: The Iron Man", Trey Parker's "Cannibal: The Musical", and Vera Chytilová's "Daisies". Also we had two short film nights, which featured surreal/avant-gard films by Luis Bunuel, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, René Clair, Fernand Léger, Germain Dulac, Maya Deren, David Lynch, Kenneth Anger, Svankmajer, Maddin and The Brothers Quay.

Also, we viewed silent experimental films such as Samuel Beckett's "Film", Norman McLaren's "A Phantasy", Stan Brakage's "Dog Star Man, Part 4", and my own "Black Cat". I got my musician friends together and played live experimental free music to accompany the films. I'm hoping to do this again soon.
Thu 5/25 3pm hearing in Oakland to save Van Kleef!!! (if you can't make it, please email instead)

I'm 99% sure I can be there...please join me!

On Thursday May 25th at 3:00 pm in Oakland City Hall, Hearing Room 2, there will be a public hearing to determine if Peter can continue to provide live music at Café Van Kleef.

Peter’s new landlords have been trying to stop him from giving local artists a place to play for the past few months. The landlords are expected to appear at the hearing and send letters opposing the music scene at CVK. This would not only hurt the Café, but the musicians that regularly play there.

If you want to be heard you are welcome at the public hearing. If you can’t make it but would like to support there being art and entertainment in the Arts and Entertainment district, you can call or send an e-mail to Barb Killey, the hearing officer that will be deciding whether Oakland will allow live music to continue at CVK. If you plan on coming you might want to let her know so that they have a big enough room reserved.

Please send comments to:
An related article from the East Bay Express:
"Saloon guy" Peter Van Kleef fights for his bar's survival.
By Will Harper Article Published Apr 19, 2006 http://www.eastbayexpress.com/Issues/2006-04-19/news/bottomfeeder.html
For nearly three years, Cafe Van Kleef has played a proud role in the hipsterization of uptown Oakland with its funky art and funky jazz performances. Now, the future of the little bar that could is in doubt: Peter Van Kleef says his new landlords have spent the past few months trying to kick him out, citing trumped-up reasons. "I'm so tired of this," he sighs. "I'm a saloon guy and that's all I want to do. I don't really want to deal with this."
"This" all started after a consortium of eight partnerships bought the building at 1621 Telegraph Avenue last fall. Van Kleef says things quickly soured during his initial sit-down with some of the owners. According to Van Kleef, they wanted him to give them his basement and mezzanine space. He was willing to do so only if he could get something in return — like the space next door, so he could expand. Ever since he resisted their demand, Van Kleef says they've been trying to get rid of him.
But that won't be easy: The bar owner has a 25-year lease, which he negotiated with his previous landlord. So, he says, the new landlords began raising dubious allegations showing him to be in violation of that lease. They claimed, for instance, that patrons were smoking inside the bar, which he denies. Last month, they sent him an eviction notice for hosting live-music shows without the cabaret license required from the city. As it turns out, Van Kleef was indeed violating city rules, although the bar owner says that no one made an issue of it until the new owners came along.
One of the owners, Stephen DeJesse, denies that he or his partners have been waging a campaign to get rid of the bar. DeJesse says everyone knew when they bought the building that Van Kleef, with his superlong lease, would come with the package. "He's more of an asset than a detriment to this area," DeJesse allows.
DeJesse says the building owners have been trying to get Van Kleef to address various safety hazards, particularly fire risks like bad electrical wiring that is not up to code. In a March 31 letter to City Administrator Deborah Edgerly, DeJesse expressed concerns that the pub's live shows attract large crowds even though the place has only one exit. DeJesse invoked the specter of the Great White concert in Rhode Island — where a fire killed 100 people — as something that could repeat itself at Cafe Van Kleef.
Van Kleef's lawyer Thomas Ostly questions DeJesse's purported safety concerns, noting that Van Kleef has never been cited by the city for code violations. The lawyer also dismisses any comparisons to the Rhode Island tragedy, which resulted from pyrotechnics fired off at a heavy metal show. The jazz musicians who play at Van Kleef typically don't blow up shit during their performances.
Ostly says the owners have backed off on their last eviction threat. In the meantime, Van Kleef has applied for a cabaret license from the city so he can keep offering live music. Good thing for him that he has friends in high places: Cafe Van Kleef happens to be one of Mayor Jerry Brown's favorite neighborhood watering holes. Last year, for instance, he spontaneously showed up during an Express bash there. Brown's press secretary, Gil Duran, also has been known to stop by for a cocktail once in a while and has clearly taken Van Kleef's side of the landlord-tenant dispute: "They're acting like Peter's stockpiling WMDs or harboring al-Qaeda," he says.

Let’s Talk Art

Tuesday, May 30th-6-8PM
Maxwell's Restuarant and Lounge
341-13th Street, Oakland 94612

Join us for this discussion on the arts community
in Oakland with Mayoral Candidate Ron Dellums.

As part of his Mayoral platform, Ron
Dellums embraces artists and wants to make Oakland
a world class center for multicultural arts. Let’s rekindle
the citywide dialogue between artists and local government.
The importance of authentic face-to-face exchange
between citizens and government cannot be overemphasized.

Oakland contains one of the highest per capita
numbers of artists in the nation. We are home to more than 5,000
professional artists, 25 professional dance companies, countless
music groups, 12 theater companies, 34 visual arts galleries, multiple
museums, historical sites and over 20 cultural festivals per year.

Oakland is ripe for a truly visionary revitalization. It will require
deep commitment and engagement on the part of every citizen. We must spark
a collaborative process between government and artists including the
possible themes of:

Opportunity-Economic Development-Leadership
Wednesday at Van Kleef

Howdy ho!

Some of y'all know me... some of you don't...

I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO CAFE VAN KLEEF

(I'll give you a second to let that sink in)

(ok, I'll give you another few seconds to get back on your chair)

Right. I really haven't. And I work in Downtown Oakland, which, I understand, is right near Van Kleef.

Anyone want to come down tomorrow night and show me... it? The Kleef? Yah?

eh?

xoxo,
Normal

I've been stood up for tonight and I don't want to go home to my cats and wash the floors--or even wash the floors WITH my cats. CVK's sort of near my office. Anyone up for meeting up and just hangin' out? I'll be there around 5:30 or so, wearing long blond hair and a long red coat, probably either reading a book or playing with Peter's toys (err.....dirty!) Come by and say hello!

The first couple of times I ordered beer at Cafe Van Kleef it was flat. Now I stick with mixed drinks. I like the freshly squeezed juice drinks especially.

The other night my friend and I were drinking Greyhounds (vodka and grapefruit juice) and they were GREAT!

What are the best drinks you've had at Van Kleef?

This once great oasis of absurdity is starting to go down the drain, and I blame musical fascism. The stage is small, but there should be a more constant and diverse selection of live music here. The owner’s a great guy, but his DJ skills suck. Do we really need to be blasted out of our seats by the same old Rolling Stones, Motown and Stevie Ray? The radio plays enough classic rock as it is. Talk about a stale act. Also, booking the same jazz and blues guys week after week is sure to chase the crowds away. There’s so much stuff to choose from in Oakland & SF, and this bar needs to reach out a little farther to stay on the top of the list. After all, a rolling stone gathers no moss. But a stone that’s stuck on the same soundtrack for years ain’t gonna have many (sane) regulars.

and his amazing multi-from cabinet, in co-operation with international maggot theatre, sansa asylum's voodoo vaudevile, the hobo gobbelins, and sour mash hug band. how many of you know of which I speak? I am (or was, will be again) Dr. Leopold, and I had some of the greatest moments of my life, performing on the tall, narrow stage. sometimes to pete's chegrin. maybe you missed these episodes (cheshire rock opera was one of my favorites, along with the 1 man banjo/as is brass band show, and of course madri gras + the voodoo vaudevile show[my first{van kleef's}] gig), but if you did not, I want to hear your take. Like wise if you want more, or would like to be present at future van kleef's appearances.
p.s. props to devin

Great Show Tomorrow (Tuesday)

Tuesday is Transmission Night! It's the start of a series of concerts by members of the Odd-Shaped Case music collective, a label that puts out unusual hard-to-classify music. The music can draw on jazz, Eastern European folk music, classical, Indian music, all all at once. Or it could be totally different.

Transmission is the band that put urban groove jazz on the map. Tuesday, the Transmission Quartet plays music that will blow you away if you like unusual, inventive jazz.

Just $5, this is the lowest price you can see Transmission. So, be there and be prepared to hear an entire evening of great music!

Sat 9/18 @ Oasis

Sat 9/18 - Back to Fools! (Oakland)

Doing up the Oasis nice and right--finally on a freakin' weekend night.

Killer DJ action (all-Tribe line-up: Star-D, Samira, Hank-the-guy-with-the-Records, Betty Ray) and the legendary Ricky Lee Robinson (www.rickrobinson.org) dishing up the glamrock (10pm)

Fun starts at 9pm...don't miss Ricky at 10pm!
11p-2a brings insane 3-way (DJ) action--watch Samira kick Star-D & Hank's ass with some Breaks and Progressive House. Betty Ray brings her sultry bootylicious beats to the lounge.

Come by for a spell, shake your thang, drink some strong drinks, watch the hot barmaids, wear your sexiest to your comfy-est.

For those decompressing folks, do a load of wash and wear that thing it was too cold out for or whatever. Cat Herders Union Local 451 (Oakland region) will be representing. If you've never been, Oasis camp has a very impressive shade structure with actual couches!

Bring your blinkies, poi toys, hula hoops. Pick a new playa name out of a hat. Meet some nice people. Hugs-a-plenty. Duck, duck, grey duck

Afterparties?

Oasis - 135 12th Street (Madison/Oak), Oakland
No cover in your desert finery (or wedding wear)

Heard Peter on KPFA this morning. Wasn't able to catch the whole thing. Need to invest in a portable headset radio, dammit. Anyway, it was a really good plug for CVK and I wouldn't be surprised if more people show up to check it out. Better expand next door pronto, Peter!

Peter also gave shoutouts to Colin Grimes, Mark Growden, Ricky Lee Robinson, Rube Waddell and on other band I wasn't familiar with. And he went up on the name of Extra Action Marching Band. ;-)

Depending on stuff and stuff, may be heading to the Queef this Wednesday, post Parkway.

But there is a super-big party happening at Oasis next Thursday (7/8) that goes from early to late (my portion of the party, which is essentially a Tribe party, runs from 6-10, but I'm sure folks will be playing until closing).

For more info look up at the Listing posted above...and there's also a party tribe (with pix of last party) at:

Who can answer these questions: we're going to meet at the kleef for a friend's birthday on saturday, and we're wondering what's going on that night? and whether they like to know ahead of time if you're going to have a big group (15-20 people)? can you reserve one of those big tables in the back or something?

The music itself was a seamless, elegant nearly abstract wash of countrified loveliness, and though his imagery speaks in a darkly romantic southwestern vocabulary of parched landscapes, rusty tin wall crosses and abandoned haciendas, I sometimes also found myself thinking of one of those rural towns of the American south with dirt roads and sugar white hilltop chapels--so peaceful as to be surreal. All this is to say that Lucas’ songs were graceful, studied and seriously pretty. "Lover, look at me with my spangled mind. I don't mind breaking, just make it quick this time." They made me want to slow dance with my boyfriend in some shadowy corner of the Utah.
The Strugglers are Randy Bickford, or perhaps more simply put, Randy Bickford is The Strugglers. While a small ensemble of guests contributed to this sophomore release, there is no mistaking that - for better of worse - this is Bickford's show. As one might expect, The New Room is a highly personal album, and it is one that one delves deep into the psyche of its composer. Having listened to it, I suspect that, at heart, Bickford considers himself to be a folk singer. Sure there are the occasional bursts of piano, the soaring flashes of soothing organs, the lazy drone of a pedal steel, and even, on one track, the robust blare of a trumpet. But what makes this particular clock tick is Bickford's jangly guitars and rich, deep tenor, pure and simple. This is songwriting stripped to its barest essence; it is unapologetically lo-fi, soul-stirring stuff that mixes elements of folk, country, and rock and blends them into haunting salvos that burn with a quiet beauty and aching loveliness. http://www.adequacy.net/reviews/s/strugglers.shtml

Burd Early hails from the Big Apple, but you'd never know it from his voice or his songs, which sound like stuff you'd be more likely to hear on the front steps of a falling-down farmhouse at the end of a long dirt road. This one-man band, the alias of songwriter James Angelos, offers a brand of sun-baked melancholia heavily steeped in Americana roots. At the same time, Burd Early possesses a bedroom pop ethic that allows drum machines and keyboards to coexist with doodling cowboy guitars, tinkling saloon piano, and gentle snare drum rhythms. Angelos sews the elements together seamlessly, creating rich pieces more complex than they initially seem, anchoring them with plaintive little narratives. www.epitonic.com
He's fun to click on.

Also looks like he's at the Queef tonight. I'll be doing my firedancing thing until about 11 in SF, but maybe I'll swing my kerosene-stinkin' self by afterwards.

We're 90% on for a poetry reading/jazz show on May 5 with CVK's normal Wednesday night band. The poetry will be by Joe Pachinko, Oakland bad-boy poet, guaranteed to use a swear word at least once every 60 seconds.

OK, this is after the fact, but I just got home from the Queef and had the best time!

Timeline: 6:40, my friend Christopher calls cuz he's in the East Bay and wants to grab some dinner. 7:30-9ish at Mijori--amazing sushi (as always), only the littlest talk of me and my ex (which is how we know each other). 9ish--I bring up the Queef, of which he's heard a little from Jon/Kyrsten (of SF Dodgeball infamy). 9:30ish-11:30ish--Cafe Van Kleef (where we run INTO Jon (who I didn't recognize immediately cuz his hair's a little different and he's wearing a shirt) & his cute friend. Some talk of rockets and gov't sponsored 3-men manned missions to space, then this amazing DJ--Zack--comes on and it's MONDAY NIGHT FEVER!!! Woo-hoo!! Never got so sweaty at the Queef. Ran into Fish (who owns Oasis--where April Fooligans was at) on the way out. Saw Phil Tagami too (where the hell was Jerry Brown?). Fun...unexpected fun...Happy Monday in Oakland!

Talk of a dance party somewhere on 6/9 (my bday).

Night-night.

I have a deaf friend who'd get a kick out of that and, I'm sure, CVK. I do :-)

I was at CVK tonight, my first time there, and I asked for an ice water. Instead of getting ice and water, I got ice, water, cherries, and food dye.

Call me picky, but when I want an ice water, the last thing in the world I want to see is red dye. So like, I asked for another water without the red stuff, and the guy (who smelled like a gin distillery and was obviously drunk) was kinda rude to me. I had to offer to pay for a plain water to get this guy to give me a plain water.

Not a good first impression, but I'll give the queef a second chance because my friend Robin tends bar there :)

Sin In Space this Thursday?

A friend told me that this cool band called Sin In Space is playing at CVK this Thursday. The lead singer of this band, Cassidy, is a friend of mine from HS, and I haven't seen him since then, so it should be neat! I always loved his guitar playing.

So yeah, I've been in this tribe for a while now, but this will be my first time going to CVK, so I am looking forward to it! Anyone else interested in going?
