MUSIC AT CAFÉ VAN KLEEF IN JEOPARDY

topic posted Tue, May 2, 2006 - 3:28 PM by  Tom
On Thursday May 25th at 3:00 pm in Oakland City Hall, Hearing Room 2, there will be a public hearing to determine if Peter can continue to provide live music at Café Van Kleef.

Peter’s new landlords have been trying to stop him from giving local artists a place to play for the past few months. The landlords are expected to appear at the hearing and send letters opposing the music scene at CVK. This would not only hurt the Café, but the musicians that regularly play there.

If you want to be heard you are welcome at the public hearing. If you can’t make it but would like to support there being art and entertainment in the Arts and Entertainment district, you can call or send an e-mail to Barb Killey, the hearing officer that will be deciding whether Oakland will allow live music to continue at CVK. If you plan on coming you might want to let her know so that they have a big enough room reserved.

Wow Tom, I had no idea, thanks for posting this. I'm sending an email to Ms. Barbara Killey now, and will also be forwarding this information on to several friends and bands to frequent Cafe Van Kleef!

I also found this article for those who may want to pass along more information to their friends:

I for one *never* went to that section of Oakland, or heard of anything cool going on there before Cafe Van Kleef, and strongly believe that it has had a positive impact in making downtown Oakland once again a place to have a cocktail and listen to excellent live music!

Kinda off topic, but wtf? What is wrong with landlords? It seems like a re-occuring theme; new landlords buy bar spaces then try to oust them by limiting their entertainment options .Is it just some sceme to get them out and then use the property for a condo developement or is there some secret plot against out of the ordinary nightspots?

I have a few ideas about why but don't even want to bother trying to figure out what they might be thinking. I assume the answer to the question is the same as 99% of the worlds questions. Money. Fortunately, they can be stopped without knowing what their problem with Oakland might be. Perhaps if they are montioring posts about they Cafe they will explain themselves.

As an employee of the cafe, though speaking for myself, any public support at the hearing May 25th will be deeply appreciated. It is my hope that the City of Oakland will grant Cindy and Peter the cabaret licence they seek. They have worked so hard and so many years to realize their dream: to help bring back some magic to the heart of the city. It would just be a shame to see that vision derailed.
As regarding the renovation of the "Uptown Arts Building" which currently houses Van Kleef's, it has certainly had its impact, some of it on our music scene, but we, and I'm sure I speak for all of us at the cafe on this point, will continue to do all we can, and with Oakland's help, to provide our clientele and musicians a venue in which to enjoy life, liberty, and libations.
