My friends' band, the Inkwell Rhythm Makers, is coming through town at the end of this month. They could really use a couple of East Bay shows, and I think they'd go over pretty well at Van Cleef's. Who should I get in touch with about this?

Wed, December 7, 2005 - 7:56 PMWhy does that name sound familiar to me? Where is the band from and what kind of music do they play?

Uh, do you realize the Inkwell Rhythm Makers is already going to be at the Stork Club next week, Tuesday December 13? They'll be performing along with the Hobo Goblins and the Sour Mash Hug Band.

Wed, December 7, 2005 - 11:18 PMI'm told the Inkwell Rhythm Makers cancelled their participation in the show at the Stork Club. I guess they're not all that interested in playing the East Bay after all. -

Re: Who do I talk to about booking a touring band?
Sat, December 10, 2005 - 3:16 PMbeing someone who has played the stork numerous times as well as worked there, I know that it is not right for every band. plus, plans fall through with regularity. I think it's awesome how you have taken the bull by the horns in terms of making the events at the stork rock but I wouldn't take it personally if this band cancels. I'm not talking shit about the club though, I have something in the works for februrary I might pitch in that direction depending on who I score for the bill. It certainly is a better place than VK's in terms of a lot of music (I was asked to perform there... then asked not to in the course of a week- previous booker though). -

It's not my show, it's Devin's show. He said the band cancelled. My point was that it was already lined up and the band is listed in the ads in both the Guardian and the East Bay Express that went out this week, and now they don't want to play. So, I get the impression that they aren't all that interested in playing the East Bay after all.
As for my own bookiing polices, I'm reluctant to book any performer that cancels a gig. In all the shows I've done over the years, I have never had a performer flake on me, because I choose only performers I know or know about through good reputation. They are troopers who will put on the same good show whether it's for 300 or 3. These are the same people I then choose when I land a corporate event, private party, wedding, etc.
So, while this band may eventually play the Stork, it likely won't be in anything I'm involved with.
I'm funny that way.

Re: Who do I talk to about booking a touring band?
Sat, December 10, 2005 - 7:40 PMmy apologies. It's completely irrisponsible for a band to flake once they've made it in the papers (of course now I've made another blanket statement w/o knowing the particulars). In my 10 years of playing, I have only cancelled 1 gig and that was because there was no promotion whatsoever by the booker (all the venue website said was "flag day", no show listed, no ads, no flyers, no supporting acts!). It's difficult enough getting a crowd to come when you get the correct info out without outsiders screwing up your venue cred. Spending some time booking for clubs, I fully understand your tone- and agree.

Wed, May 3, 2006 - 11:56 AMcome down to the cafe and ask to speak with Kevin Wilhelm. He does all the booking for us right now. He can be hard to find sometimes but be persistant, not pushy but persistant with your inquires and he's bound to show himself. he's sorta like the sasqwatch .
